Why read a daily devotional?

We are called into a daily relationship with our Lord and Savior. Two favorite passages that provide that instruction are found in Joshua and in Matthew.

In the Old Testament Joshua, faced with the daunting challenge of taking over leadership after Moses death, was instructed that the keys to his success was to properly relate to God’s word, and to trust in God’s continual presence and guidance. The instruction to “meditate on it day and night” can be taken literally, and also can be taken to mean in good times and in difficulty.

Joshua 1:7-9

7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

In the New Testament, Jesus spells out for us in the Sermon on the Mount the qualities and conduct that should characterize a godly man or woman. Hunger and thirst are things we satisfy daily. Thus our pursuit of God’s will is something we should do on a daily basis.

Matthew 5:6

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Please note God’s promises. He will be with us wherever we go, and in our pursuit He will fill us up.
